Edward C. Gonzalez was raised in Fresno and attended Fresno Unified School District schools.  He attended California State University Fresno where he received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science and his Masters in Educational Leadership.   Ed spent 15 years as a classroom teacher in the Madera Unified School District and was nominated 5 times for the Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers by his former students.  In his 18 years as an administrator, Ed has received numerous honors, which include being a recipient Principal of the California Distinguished School award, the Principal of Madera Unified’s first 800 API school, and the recipient of the School Library Journal’s inaugural National Administrator of the Year.  He was recently selected as one of only 12 Americans to be invited by the German Embassy in the United States to tour Germany’s successful Vocational Training program.   He spent four years as the Superintendent of American Union Elementary School District, two years in Fresno Unified School District as the Associate Superintendent of the Department of Prevention and Intervention, and one year as the Administrator of Dropout Prevention at the Fresno County Office of Education before becoming the Superintendent of Madera Unified School District in August 2013.  Ed is actively involved in fostering collaborative relationships between the schools, businesses, industry, community organizations, and families to promote student success and regional development.

 

Ed has served as a teacher, coach, choir director, and mentor for hundreds of students during his 33 year career.  He was a member of the Madera-based vocal group, Second Take, for 17 years, and continues to compose music and write short stories and poems in his leisure.  Ed has been married to his best friend, Barbara, for 20 years, and is the proud father of five children and four grandchildren.
